At some stage Ludwig moved to Grafton. I haven't found any family connections, but there was apparently a German community there at that time so it's possible he knew someone up there.
It seems from an ad in the newspaper that he was well established as a baker & pastrycook by May 1880. An entry in April indicates that an 'M Mathenius' won the bread category of a show in the Grafton area.

One thing that is definite is that he married Catharine Steltzer on 24th July 1880 in Grafton. There are few details on the marriage certificate - Ludwig is listed as a widower & Catharine as a spinster. According to her death certificate, she was 45 when she married.Ludwig. Her death certificate also says she was 40 years in NSW. It could be assumed that she had been in Australia around 12 months when she married Ludwig (I'm still trying to find out information about the Stelzer family).
